Background of the Study
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability, along with non-motor symptoms including cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. The management of PD is multifaceted, requiring a combination of pharmacological treatments, physical therapy, and psychosocial support to improve the quality of life for patients. Nurses play a vital role in the multidisciplinary care of PD patients, often acting as the primary caregivers who manage daily interventions and provide education to patients and families.
At Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, a large medical facility serving the Bayelsa state region, nurses are involved in the care of PD patients who require continuous management of both motor and non-motor symptoms. However, adherence to evidence-based best practices in PD care may vary among nurses, especially in regions where specialized training is limited. This evaluation aims to assess the adherence of nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, to established best practices in the management of PD and identify potential areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
The management of Parkinson’s disease requires consistent adherence to best practices, which include early identification of symptoms, appropriate medication administration, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. However, studies have suggested that nurses may face challenges in adhering to these practices, particularly in settings where there is a lack of specialized training or resources. At Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, nurses' knowledge and adherence to best practices in PD management may be influenced by these factors, potentially leading to suboptimal patient care. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which nurses follow best practices in the management of Parkinson’s disease.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the adherence of nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, to best practices in managing patients with Parkinson’s disease.
2. To evaluate the knowledge and skills of nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, regarding the management of Parkinson’s disease.
3. To identify the barriers to adherence to best practices in the management of Parkinson’s disease at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, and propose solutions.
Research Questions
1. To what extent do nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, adhere to best practices in managing patients with Parkinson’s disease?
2. How knowledgeable are nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, regarding the best practices in managing Parkinson’s disease?
3. What are the challenges that nurses face in adhering to best practices in managing Parkinson’s disease at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, exhibit low adherence to best practices in managing patients with Parkinson’s disease.
2. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, have limited knowledge of best practices in the management of Parkinson’s disease.
3. Lack of specialized training and resources are significant barriers to adherence to best practices in managing Parkinson’s disease at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in departments such as neurology, geriatrics, and general medical wards at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, who are responsible for managing patients with Parkinson's disease. The limitations of the study include the reliance on self-reported data for adherence and the challenge of recruiting nurses with significant experience in Parkinson’s care.
